Medicare Scam Red Flags: 10 Things Seniors Should Never Ignore

Scammers often create urgency: a benefit will supposedly disappear, a new card must be activated immediately, or a ‘free’ item requires your Medicare number. Slow the interaction down.

Red flags

1. An unexpected caller demands your Medicare number.
2. Someone asks for bank credentials to ‘unlock’ a government benefit.
3. A caller threatens immediate loss of Medicare unless you pay.
4. A website imitates government branding but uses an unrelated domain.
5. You are pressured to sign blank forms.
6. A salesperson says a service is ‘free’ but will bill Medicare without explaining why it is needed.
7. You are told not to speak with family or your doctor.
8. A caller refuses to let you verify the organization independently.
9. You receive bills or Medicare Summary Notice items for services you did not receive.
10. Someone offers cash or gifts in exchange for your Medicare number.

What to do instead

Hang up, use the number on your Medicare card or an official Medicare website, and independently verify the request. Review Medicare Summary Notices and report suspicious charges.
