The Senior Benefits Renewal Calendar: 8 Dates You Should Track
Getting approved is not always the last step. Benefits can be interrupted when a household misses a renewal, fails to return verification or overlooks an annual enrollment decision.
Build one benefits calendar
Use a paper calendar or phone reminders for every program in the household. Track at least: SNAP recertification, Medicaid renewal, Medicare plan review, QI reapplication if applicable, housing recertification, LIHEAP seasonal applications, property-tax relief deadlines and any local service renewal.
Open government mail promptly
A plain envelope can contain a time-sensitive request. Keep agency mail in one location and respond through the official contact information on the notice.
Report required changes
Programs differ in which household changes must be reported and when. Read the approval notice rather than assuming all programs use the same rule.
Keep confirmation records
When submitting an online renewal, save the confirmation page or number. For mailed documents, keep copies. A simple record can be invaluable if an agency says something was not received.
