Home-Delivered Meals for Seniors: Where to Start Looking
For an older adult who has difficulty shopping or preparing meals, food assistance is not limited to SNAP. Local aging programs may offer home-delivered meals, congregate meals or nutrition services.
Contact the local aging network
Eldercare Locator can identify the Area Agency on Aging or related organization serving the ZIP code. Local agencies can explain which meal programs operate nearby.
Eligibility is not identical everywhere
Programs may consider age, ability to leave home, ability to prepare food and other local criteria. Some services request a voluntary contribution rather than charging a fixed price.
Ask about more than delivery
Meal programs can sometimes connect participants to nutrition counseling, benefits assistance or other community supports. If the older adult has dietary restrictions, ask what accommodations are available rather than assuming a menu can be changed.
If food is needed immediately
Ask the local agency about emergency food resources while a longer-term meal service is being arranged.
